Do Not Stumble

In Numbers 13-14 the story of the Israelites journey out of Egypt to the Promised Land hits a roadblock. The people of Israel after seeing how powerful God is, parting the Red Sea so they could go through and not around it, providing food that sustained them in a wilderness, disobeyed God out of pure fear and faithlessness. You see God had promised Moses that He would give the land of Canaan to the people of Israel but the land that He had promised them was already occupied! What made things even worse was that based on a report brought back by some who had been sent to spy in this land their cities were fortified and the people were strong and fit able to defend their land . Here was the testing of their faith! Guess what they failed. Like many of us today who use what we see and not our faith in God to solve our problems they failed.

They had been promised a land that “flowed with milk and honey” but this time they had to overcome a people that seemed stronger than they were and guess what those people were stronger than them. We have to remember that the Israelites had been walking in the wilderness for quite some time now, while they people of Canaan had been comfortably secure in their land enjoying this milk and honey. Along this journey many Israelites had lost faith, complaining about the lack of comfort, lack of food, even proclaiming that they had been brought out of Egypt to starve in the wilderness! Yes if many of us were in that same position we would have probably done the same or worse, who knows; we have never been in such a position.

So, based on the reports brought back going to Canaan as they Lord had said was a no go. Here again many would have thought that God must have been mistaken, “don’t know what him talking bout” and so they agreed among themselves to take a hard pass on this plan that God had come up with. Maybe He needed to go back to the drawing board because that was not it! These grasshoppers as some of the spies referred to themselves just would not survive such daring.

So in fear the people rebelled against God instead of unitying to complete His will for them. They rejected God like a leading there encouraging His people they tuned Him out completely. They decided “oh well after coming this far and realising that Moses mad let us pick another leader and head back to Egypt, might as well”. They were willing to go back through the wilderness to a place they could no longer prosper in because they feared trusting in God and the plans He had for them. The milk and honey could not tempt them saving themselves was much more real and important.

At this point Moses is distraught he knows that punishment is near, God will not allow this rebellion to go unpunished. Can you imagine how vexed God was at this point? What an ungrateful set a people!

God was ready to give the people what they wanted, their wilderness. However Moses interceded and God relented because of one man. Of all the spies sent out Caleb was the only one who came back and encouraged the people that the occupiers of this land could be defeated. However, in a sea of doubt his reassurances were drowned out. For his sake God did abandon His promise to give the Promised Land to the Israelites. However, this gift was delayed as an entire generation could not enter the Promised Land but had to wonder the desert. Yes, so close yet so far.

They stumbled and many fell. Today there are many things that prevent us from experiencing our promised land; at the point when we are about to have that experience we allow fear to run the show. We expect life to be smooth sailing and when it is not, we promptly grab our hearts which have fallen out of our chests and we run for the caves. We need to take heart when we are faced with challenges and remember that we are never alone in our distress. It may be hard to imagine but there is always something better waiting for us beyond the problem we now face. God is faithful to us we just need to return the favour.

Mad Thinking

You know what I tink?
eh?
you want to hear what I have to say?
I think you in trouble.
everyday I see you pass
you busy,
go here
go there
but you nuh reach nowhere.
I think I do more
in a one hour
than you do in a year!
everyday you dress up nice nice,
but everyday
the frown line dem inna your face multiply and get deeper.
you catch a little cold
and you start to worry and fret.
You not strong enough,
your mind and body weak.
Look at me!
I eat any and every thing,
go everywhere and do everything and never sick a day.

So you think you free.
Alright,
When last you do what you really want to do?
When last you say what is on your mind?
you free?
So how comes you cannot live without so many things you going to dead leave.
You see I wake up any hours and a so my day start.
I don't owe no one nothing.
I answer to no man
woman
or child.
But even when you get old
you still a go tie up.
you still a go try to be free.

bwoy,
it look like you might have to be mad,
to really make it in this life.

Strength…

Inner strength is an experience that leads to a sense of peace and having a sense of well-being. Being strong is hard especially when others do not expect you to be. We can easily allow situations to overwhelm us to the point where we cannot move forward, because we only can see the path we left behind. When we would rather stay in the happiness of the “good ol’ days”, then we can say forget being strong and just be complacent.

I have had to be strong many times. The first was when my mother left me behind and I, out of sheer terror ran behind her only to be beaten back to my new home. I had to learn to live without her. To only see her once per week and sometimes months in between. I felt like an orphan.

I had to learn how to be strong when my grandmother, my second mother, died the day before my first exam, in the first year of university. When I had to attend her funeral I made sure to cry before and not during it. I had to be strong when I was told after the first year that since my grandmother’s death the little money available to me to go to school, had evaporated over night. I had to be strong, when Mondays to Fridays I went most days at school eating very little or nothing at all because I did not have enough for food and bus-fare. I had to be strong when all it seemed I was working for was not to leave university without a degree. I had to be strong working from 6:00 a.m to 7:30 p.m Mondays to Fridays each summer, after her death, so that I could have some money to go back to University, even with student loans. At least I had a way out.

And once I left I thought, ” well, I no longer have to struggle, once I get a job” – how Naive! I lost my strength many times since then and from most of life’s hard knocks I have not recovered. But I still have to be strong in order to get back to my true strength to meet my true true self again. So I can say hi, hello, how are you to the girl I once knew.

Why I Can Smile…

You see these pearly whites?

You see me Smiling?

Guess why I can smile.

I can smile as I tell it because,

I’ve been to hell and back

The world is filled with the perfect storms to make you fail. There are many among us who walk around everyday with a permanent smile. They are always busy moving here and there, conquering the world. Many may say those smiles are fake and that they are fake for wearing them. Others are harsh in how they judge them people (well really who has the right to judge) based on our suspicion of their smiling faces. But sometimes their smiles are the badges that they earn from going to hell and surviving to tell the tale…

Finding Strength in Weakness.

Have you ever met someone who has been through tragedy after tragedy and they seem content and happy? It’s not because they are cold, heartless or flippant about the experience. It’s because at some point they had nothing to smile or laugh about; they could not. There was a time when all they had were cold tears for comfort and a darkness that was their constant companion. There was a time when all they could do was stand still as they were battered by the difficulties of life.

When all else fails many of us turn to laughter to lighten the load, but many also do not. We forget our faith and ignore all good intentions, in our anger with life and all the struggles we experience. We feel resentful of those who seem to be doing well, stress free or carefree; and it seems like this chapter will never end.

When you begin to emerge from the nightmare, is when you can smile

For those who have been at their lowest and survived, there is a sense of rebirth, a second chance to live out their dreams, live their purpose. So they smile in the telling of their struggles and laugh at their failures. They are happy not mostly for having had those moments, but for surviving them. They can smile now in nostalgic remembrance of a time when they experienced a dessert so dry that their tears disappeared and they thought they would never again what it felt to cry. When they relearn the act of crying they will cry tears of joy, because they have been to hell and back.

Before you dismiss someone’s right to smile and laugh at the oddest of moments, consider what they may have been through to earn them.Instead join them when they are able to find pleasure in simple things, knowing that if you have not done so yet, you will eventually be making your own trip to hell and back. When you do, you too will be ready to give your testimony, through tears of joy and a lighthearted laughter.

Staying In Your Lane.

It’s never a good idea to hijack someone else’s dreams…

Simone Grant 2019

The first reaction to the statement is that the idea of staying in your lane is a bad thing. But not when you make one for yourself. Hear me out.

We all have a standard that we live by and often it has been conceived of by someone else and we are just conforming to it. We dress, eat think and play mainly by what is deemed acceptable and right. However, what if by doing so you end up feeling further from your dreams than you want to be. We read self help books, but it’s someone else’s experience; We get advice but often times we don’t like what we hear. we wait to get what we deserve but would rather return it when we do.

Therefore lets not look at the idea of staying in your lane as a bad thing but a necessary thing.

The road is not always for the fastest but those with the confidence to stay the course!

I recently saw the car above. I have no idea what type of car it is nor the year made BUT I know it’s OLD for our modern roads. Maybe older then my grand mother! I had seen this car once before and noticed that everyone it passed turned to look at it long after it had slowly sped by. Some persons even took out their smartphones to take a pic and on the day i got the picture above, I was no different.I thought, “wow, he is so brave, poor thing!” This from a girl who does not even own a car. Yet again we digress…

But, he seemed very confident with his ride, even when motorists tried to pass him quickly to get away from the “slownesss” of it all. He was focused on enjoying the ride as music blared from his radio or stereo or whatever it was coming out of. And I thought, this guy is very comfortable in his lane. Good for him! Some of us try to serve lanes and end up in a ditch, because we do not belong in the lane we are trying to get to or there are too many vehicles already there and we have been pushed, literally, out of the line.

Nothing’s Wrong with staying in your lane.

There is nothing wrong with staying in your lane. Be confident in the plans you have made; I had a plan from grade nine about what I wanted to do but I did not stick to it. I was influenced by the wishes or the supposed wishes of others and made myself powerless to chart my own course. Don’t let others influence where you want to go and how you get there.

Also, by staying in your lane you are staying true to who you are; so the next time someone wonders why you are the way you are, let them know that’s just the way it is.When you stay in your lane, you don’t have time to be watching anyone else because you are about your business and time wasted watching what others are doing can never be regained. A true waste indeed!

Then consider that just because the ride looks less bumpy on the other said it does not mean that it is. We all have problems and switching lanes to hawk on someone else’s dream is not gonna solve yours. Instead focus and remind yourself what the plan was all along and stick with it! It’s easier to think that you have to make drastic changes all the time in order to get ahead because we see people doing it. We forget that we are not like everyone. Further, we don’t all need to be at the same place at the same time.

Before speeding head first take the time to enjoy the ride and get your bearings.

Tribute For a Simply Great Man…

THE MAN

an almost forgotten acquaintance
was in town recently
i noticed that it started raining
just as he ambled in

i remember him as a simple man
growing up, we all wanted
to be doctors, lawyers & teachers
so the blood could ebb out of the village

my friend had much more sober dreams
he asked the heavens to grant him
the imposing peace of the blue-gum in his backyard
& that all the poor send him their tears
so he could be humble like the sun
so the red wax of the stars would not drip onto him

i remembered that man today
& all i think of is his unassuming radiance
like that of a blushing angel

as for his dreams
he tells us
whole forests invade his sleep at night
so that there’s only standing room
for the dreams

I went to a funeral today. It’s all part of life, while we are busy trying to find our way, some hop on the exit line. The poem above was read as a tribute, and it made me think. Do we ever consider what type of tribute we are writing for ourselves. I felt the love for this man , who was a brother, husband, father and friend. And he was a great man. His greatness was not based on wealth or titles amassed but on the simply quiet ways he had positively impacted the lives of everyone he met. He leaves as his legacy not measurable wealth but an example of true success. The ability to rise from mistakes, disappointments and seemingly surmountable challenges to bring joy, healing and comfort to those blessed to have known you.

Live your best life to the fullest because, hey you only live once. But be the best you that you can be while doing so. Then instead of telling everyone you are and were the greatest, everyone will say it for you, when you’re no longer here to show it.

Also keep in mind that the self portrait you paint for others to remember you by, can either evoke deep regret and pain or unrestrained fondness and pleasure.

You Tried It!

When you attempt to flatter yourself or make others look foolish but it didn’t work out well for you.

My personal favorite:

when someone tries to check you but it fails!

For persons who try it we just give them a [toast]!!!

There comes a time in life when you have to say enough is enough. I wanted to include some exclamation marks here but As I grow older I try to remain calm – until sufficiently provoked of course. But if it was when I was younger then who knows. Anyways! You have to say enough when you are placed in a position where you have to respectfully correct others about their view of you. When you have to make it clear that they do not have control over your image or your destiny.

It’s great to be nice and be a unifying force and stand for world peace. But when your world is being compromised by the malicious intentions of a few, you need to stand your ground. Among us are some people who think too much of their influence on you and we need to educate them. We need to sit them gently down – or not – and remind them of our own power and stubborn will to thrive in any place; whether an oasis or in the desert.

Just had to put this here!!!

In response to those people my grandmother would say, “not today satan, you tried it but not to-day!

It’s always good to take stock of the moments when you feel you are about to be defeated in your push forward. We cannot give in to those persons or feelings, because we have a plan that needs to come to fruition.

It’s hard sometimes to pick yourself up after others try to tear you down or, when out of the blue you’re hit from behind.

Never stop, never give up, even when your nemesis is waiting in the wings to devour you and your dreams. Stand and defend yourself and your peace of mind and watch everything fall in place!
