Mighty One

Mighty One
             For Karen Mighty-Byfield

Mighty one.
Powerful and strong.
To this land you belong
For in no one’s box do you stand.
So you must run
To find your wings
And fly to Destiny.

Beautiful one,
You were brave all along
And now you know
That fear taught you your song
No more can you be overrun
By regret so deep
And nightmarish sleep
That aimed at your dreams.
Because now you know
The secret of your hips
As they swish and dip
To your promised destination.

In Pursuit

In Pursuit

In pursuit I chased
but In got disengaged
from the ordering of my mind.
I looked for a sign
it did not come
so my sign I made
But ended up dismayed
When my sign led to a dead end.
I ran and ran
then ran some more
to find a home secure
but instead I ran through an open door
and ended up on a desolate moore!
Then
from the corner of my eye
now here's my sign
though I
but look here
it was a big black fly!
So now I roam
far from home
my pursuit now quite noisome.

This Thorne

This Thorn

It is perfect
This thorne in my side
at first I denied to smile
Through this thorn
in my eyes.
The wait is long
now I cannot see
my hope grew strong.
So to God I sing
a new song
Now I know
where I belong.
Since I surrendered
I can sense this great love
the plans I had for me
no longer convinces me
Now it is His great plan
that qualifies me.

Portrait of a Queen

Portrait of a Queen

There is power in her,
black strong and true.
Framed in sunshine,
a masterpiece from paradise -
Eden's golden child.
Protected by the sword
she roams in elegance.
A natural queen.
The Nubian queen.
There is peace concealed
in those loving eyes.
A smile that tells you -
"It's okay to thrive".
She stretches hereself
reaches tall enough
to touch you where you are
so you too can shine like a star.
Now watch her shine
in a beauty that is so divine.

Freedom

Freedom

What does any of us know
about freedom?

Have you felt high
knowing no fear.

You walk down the road
with steps light like the air.

Have you felt the wind
sweep you along.

Knowing worldly cares
do not belong
where you are.

Freedom is the treasure
when you have nothing,
owe no one
and belong to no doctrine.

Freedom is a fat camel
that glides through the needle's eye:

unbothered
unprepared
but unencumbered
by Life's cares.

Freedom is losing it all
but knowing finally
you have gained your soul
by breaking through life's prison walls.

Blessed Life

 Blessed Life

Everything worthwhile is up hill
and the Son shines there the brightest.
A blessed life gives life,
abundantly,
continually,
without fail.
A blessed life lets you follow
a stream of comfort when you are low
and makes your faith grow and grow.
It lets you leave the darkness behind
to follow the light.
It takes you from the end
and brings you to a newness
you could never comprehend,
unless you had seen it.
Your problem meets your best life,
with your blessed life,
cries with joy and surrenders all.
At the core is the source of all life
and whatever you lose
will come right back to you.
That is a blessed life.

Wait

Wait

Now wait.
Wait,
wait the livelong day,
the steps may be shorter here
and you may fall.
you may be tired
but wait.
it's hard
when the way is cloudy
and everything seems in vain,
wait.
The waiting is hard
but wait.

You move premature
grab at straws,
fall,
into detours
that make you obscure.

Wait,
and while you wait,
pray.
