Black OR White?

I have come to realise that for many years, I have not been thinking in colours but in black or white. In my humble position I recognise that this way of thinking has undermined my relationship with others and tainted the experiences that I have had. But where did this all or nothing mentality come from? And more importantly how do I fix this? Somehow it became normal to think like this and looking closely this way of thinking is how we have been conditioned to think. In many movies I watched as a child, the good guy character is always the best, he never lies – but if he does only to the bad people – he never cheats or kills without reasons, in essence he is simply the knight in shining armor! Then there is the bad guy, rotten to the core, a real devil who is deserving of every bad thing that happens to him. As we get older we apply this concept to every area of our lives. People are either good or bad, period! While our experiences are summed up as either great or terrible. We either ignore or we are unaware of the grey areas or the in-betweens. We can never see the colours that change and shift in our varied experiences.

At first I would have disagreed with this self-diagnoses. one, because I thought I was very open to many opinions and two, because the thought of existing in such a rigid manner is very depressing. Who wants to live their lives thinking in extremes? Thinking in extremes can lead a person to make very unfair assumptions about others and to also have unfair expectations of them. But the reality is, I do think in black and white! So as a black and white thinker, I know if given two options, I feel I must choose the lesser of two evils, even if doing so compromises my belief and morals. This is not good at all. Also, I do think that someone is good until they do something and they become not just, ” not so good”, but evil personified. I have worried if people will think that I am a good person and do everything in my power to be so, because that is how I want to be viewed. Yet no matter how hard I try I always disappoint myself as the the bad takes over and clip the wings I try to grow. But, this is not healthy. This way of thinking has caused me to be too sensitive and too suspicious of any criticism that comes my way or dare I say any imagined criticism. Now, criticism I am discovering is not bad because no matter the place is comes from, there is always an opportunity to grow and learn from them. Then there is the mistake I make in thinking, if I just work harder and do more than I will be justly rewarded.” However, I have been learning that “good people” get punished all the time and some lose everything that they have, instead of gaining the world. Doing good does not mean that only good things will follow and it is not true that in every situation or most of the times even, the person who screws up all the time is destined to gain only bad things, for all eternity.

These black and white thoughts lead to a stagnant life, as you wait for what you expect, and do not move with the reality of a situation, because you are blinded to the truth. There is also the result of lacking vision when that is exactly what you need. So you can’t see yourself doing something other than you expected or others expect you to do, and so you are not adaptable to change. When you are asked to give new ideas, you are hopeless and useless because everything that exists seems good enough already. When you think every problem has one clear answer then certain problems will never be solved properly. Also, if you want to escape your prison – no matter what that may be – you may never do so if you look to the locked door only or, if you try, you do so already accepting that it will be impossible.

From my few words we realise that there are many pitfalls to thinking in black and white. However, moving beyond this way of think can be hard to do. What I have started to do, is to acknowledge that this way of thinking has prevented me from being fearless enough to see the rainbows that God has sprinkled throughout my life; they exist within and around all of us.

I Wish...
I wish to see things clear
no matta blocking me.
I wish to see the real world
in colours
real
in colours
true.

Shut It Out!

Sometimes you have to turn everything off and just breathe. We are being bombarded with news that has us on edge every single day. Non Stop messaging that seems to be driving us crazy. Either that or stark raving mad and ready to do battle. There are times when many of us feel as if we are truly going crazy, our heads spinning with all that is taking place around us and to us.

We have become social media junkies. surfing all the social media platforms that seem to give us 10 million answers to one question and all of them different, falling short of the mark of enlightenment. It never seems to end! By the end of each week we are left feeling frazzled and ironically exhausted. surfing and sparing with all this information can be tiring.

Then there is this “new normal” that everyone keeps harping about which makes you feel like you are living in the twilight zone. What is remotely normal about this 2020, new normal must be a joke. Nothing is the same and nothing will be the same. Many are looking forward to 2021, but keep in mind that we were all excited and eager for 2020, and look how that turned out.

The fact is we are at a place where last year this time we would have never imagined we would be at. So what do we do now? There are many ways that we have been made to develop a healthy dose of fear and sense of powerlessness – unprecedented. Well, we have nowhere to run, quarantine restrictions seems to be taking care of that and made escape that much harder. Then how do we tackle the walls that are closing in?

We simply have to shut it all out. We have to go off radar by getting off social media and spending a little more time preparing something to eat instead of trying for the uptenth time to join that zoom meeting. Stop forcing our mind and body to do what they are not willing to do at that moment and just sign off for a while.

Everything and then some that has come with this covid pandemic year will still be there when you sign back on. Just like the virus, those issues will be here for a while. And if it means totally signing off to keep your health and peace of mind then do that to0. In the year of improbabilities, it may just be the right time to shut it all out and go off radar.

Not Everyone can go Up the Mountain

Not everyone can go up the mountain with you.

I am sure that at some point you dreamed about who would be there with, at each milestone. Yes there were some you knew for sure, who would not make it. But, there were others whom you were sure would be there, who would always be there no matter what. However, as time goes by people start disappearing and you begin to wonder what happened? What could you have done to hold on to them, to make them stay?

I am realising now, just now, that not everyone will be with you in the end. Whether it is family, friends or the ones you have grown so attached to. Because you had started thinking life would be unimaginable with everyone still there, you may get stuck when they leave you.

The truth is, not everyone was meant to be there at the end and not everyone were even there to cheer you on. Some were there to prove to you that there is no greater power than that of The Most High. Some were there to remind you of how strong you are when they betray you, to remind you how easily you can be tempted, how weak you are without the support of those who truly love you. Some are there to remind you, to remind us, that at the end of it all we are all just people, trying to do the best we can, which is incomparable to the experience of others.

Going up a mountain, I can only imagine, can be a daunting enterprise and we need the human chain that can never break. We will need those who will be willing to lay down to ensure that our path will not be too rocky, We will need some who will push us up when we can go no further and drag us along when we consider stepping back; when we think of letting go of that seemingly impossible dream.

Not everyone can go with us up our mountains, we may lose some along the way but it is okay. We will never forget those who helped to get us there, those we lost and those who showed their true colours. There may be some pain, pain so great that you think you cannot bear it; but you will make it.

And when you get to that mountain top and look over at the other peak, you will just be grateful that God provided just enough of the right people to help you reach that milestone. You will be glad that it was those few special gems who got to experience it with you and who will help you along your journey to the next mountain.

Cliff and Clouds

Protect Your Spirit.

I have felt that I need to be more actively involved in doing this; I need to protect my spirit from things that seek to destroy it. Therefore, I have felt this urge and kind of desperation, to protect my spirit from everything within my control and those outside my control, that may affect me negatively. This can be hard because, after all, we are only humans. However, we have the power of the Almighty at our disposal.

We all have so much to give but if we become blinded by doubts and fear we will never know this. Often times we find ourselves in situations that we never imagined we would be in or we begin to recognise ourselves less and less. We are not who we thought we were or who we were meant to be.

We have to be vigilant about what we allow in our space. Our thoughts and action will affect us if we give the wrong things full reign in our lives. We may recognise that there are things that make us sad depressed or feel out of sorts, but, we either feel we have to do them or we lack the control to stop. However, if there are things or people that bring little to the table and diminish our light, then we have to protect our spiritual being.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7)

We have to let them go. We have to let them go and never look back. Not because we no longer care about those people, or no longer see those things as desirable, but because we want not only to live but thrive. We want to thrive and be the best that we can be and that means seeing the danger beforehand and walking away from it.

We have to protect our fragile and wonderfully complex and flawed being. We have to protect our spirits from situations that may make us feel dirty or defeated, when we are neither. We have to know the enemy that seeks to destroy us never sleeps and therefore be prepared to withstand all attacks of the mind, spirit and body. It may be difficult for some or it may be easy. but it has to be done.

Now, the obvious question is how can you protect your spirit, your energy? Well there are many solutions out there but the main thing you will have to do is acknowledge those things that will bring you down. Write them down, so you can have a visual and remember them, know that they are always there, lurking and over time, take your time and move further and further away from them and move closer to the things that bring, light, love and peace. We need to draw closer to God and rely on the Holy Spirit for sustenance. That is how we can find peace, happiness and purpose.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

The Tragic Hero

Life is not a competition.

I am sure you have heard this before, but have you really thought about what this truly means?

You don’t have to be the best. Right now. There is no time limit on all that you have to do. While everyone is striving, you feel as if you are not. There you are feeling as if you are being left behind. All your friends have graduated and moved on to the next phase, but you my friend, are left behind. You may feel like you are one of the leftovers. The one who becomes the example of where not to be and what not to do. It is easy to feel left behind, because so many seem to follow the hustler formula. They want success and they want it quick. They have to always be on the move, always grabbing the next opportunity, the next big thing. To be a hustler has become something to be admired by many and oftentimes we are bombarded with YouTube videos and a plethora of articles that tout the benefits of the hustler mentality.

However, While we strive to get to the top as quickly as possible, we never really take the time to understand our purpose because we have become doers and not thinkers. We become burnt out trying to do a million things in twenty-four hours. I think of it as me preparing a lesson to teach, with so many activities crammed in it that the students do not have time to benefit or enjoy those activities. We become so focused on getting to the top and staying there that we deprive ourselves of the experience of enjoying the moments that matter, those moments that will remain with us when all those positions and wealth mean nothing.

A lot of us lose the things we have because we focus too much on what we do not have. The hustle culture that has emerged and which a lot of persons try to cultivate comes from a place of insecurity for many. A place where they always compare themselves to others and strive for things that they were never meant to hide. So you may know someone who has been on the hustler grind for a very long time and is still waiting their turn to get to the top. There you are, looking in from the outside, you realise that all they do is go in circles but never truly grow and are never close to the summit they crave to conquer.

I recently looked at the story of Saul and David, both were Kings of Israel and the lesson of the story is timeless. There are so many lessons actually but for me in considering the story what stood out, was how foolish Saul was to allow his envy and jealousy of David to destroy his life. It began with a celebration that quickly turned sour and it was a turning point that destroyed Saul’s legacy:

-: Saul Envies David
…6
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments. 7 And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” (1 Samuel 18: 6-7)

Saul was at the top of his game, the big man, he was King! Until, a young boy with humble beginnings, like him, came into his line of vision stole some of his shine and he was no longer happy with all his previous achievements and the privilege of being King. He was a King but he was not satisfied. He needed records, numbers greater than anyone to prove he was great.

Why do people hustle? Why is it so important to be the greatest, to have persons bow at your feet because out of everyone else, you made it. But made it where? How much higher can you go than being a King? Even at the top, Saul was discontent, disillusioned and at the end, fiercely bitter. He felt that David’s growing popularity and success was a direct reflection on him. Like Saul too many of us get too caught up in the lives of others and what they are doing, achieving or “winning” at. We feel if they succeed it may show us up. Then all of a sudden everyone begins to question, “what about you, what have you done lately?” Sometimes before someone asks the questions of our legitimacy, we begin to destroy it, by comparing ourselves to others and then come up short, woefully inadequate, headed for failure. Though this was not the case a few minutes before.

Saul’s strength and courage was buried under a need for approval and the fear of being criticized. This is seen when he tries to regain favour in the eyes of his army and people by making a sacrifice that was never his to make. This need to always be favourable in the eyes of others, to always be number one, even if it means making compromises, can be seen by many who strive to succeed at any cost.

11 And Samuel said, “What have you done?”

Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, 12 then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.” (1 Samuel 13: 11-12 )

Saul was so focused on being better, when he was already good, in being highly favoured, when he already was; he last it all because he neglected to notice all the great things he had going for him. It was a real tragedy that such a great man allowed his insecurities and fear of rejection to completely Stifle the potential of who he could have been.

So, the story of Saul becomes a cautionary tale, of how competition can go bad and lead a person to self-destruct. Take note even as you aim to be the best you that you can be.

What is Life?!

I find myself in 2020 exclaiming or whispering “what is life!” much too often. The most recent reason for this outburst stems from being hit with a cold dose of reality. The disappointment of being reminded that life has been set in such a way that it is very difficult to really get off the hamster wheel that is life in the 21st century. It is a disappointment that makes me even more determined to work in the right way to get the results that will lead to my peace of mind and overall health. Not only do I have to work but I have to be smarter about how I use the resources available to me.

Things are easier said than done.

It is hard to reconfigure your brain to adjust to all the truths that you are faced with, almost as if sometimes you are being constantly attacked with them and their is no clear escape route. The only thing you have is the determination not to be completely overwhelmed, and thereby defeated by so many harsh, unyielding truths. it is hard to think clearly when you cannot make heads or tail of a situation, you don’t know what to do.

You have to find the peace within to make sense of the senseless and the uncomfortable.

So disappointment has reared its ugly, ugly head once more and knocked you on your butt. However, there is no option but to find a new way to tackle the problem that has not been solved.

This is life!

Even though you feel like you are travelling through sargasso sea,the challenging of escape is one you have to take. What becomes of life if you accept that the challenge is too great? You will never get to your destination and by your thoughts you will already be defeated. One good thing about the sargasso sea is the calmness, therefore one not see positives in those ugly truths.

At least you have the chance to map out new strategies and mount new defenses that will get you to where you should be.

It’s Not Over

When we are running our race, we have an idea of how things will go. SUre we will face obstacles and we will have disappointments, but most of us dream of not only clearing these hurdles but finishing the race with arms outstretched in triumph breaking the ribbon and crossing the finish line.

However, the reality is that some of us face a challenge so great that we pull up sharply in agonising pain and tumble to the ground, protrate. The shock of pain is so sharp, painful and sudden that we cannot catch our breaths much less get up to finish the race. We begin to think we have lost. “We have lost”, there is no way we can win, all the runners have gone way ahead and there is no way we can get past the pain much less to continue, catch them up and place.

Too many of us at this point decide to give up, “why bother, isn’t the aim to win?” “If I cannot win why bother”. So we still too long and think too much of the humiliation we face. We hear the whispers, “poor thing, so much potential, wasted”. Another nail in the coffin, why bother? The results will not match the potential, what was the point of it all?

Since the race has been lost why bother. Will I lay here and let the shame of my defeat wash over me?

Then there is the story of Derek Redmond. A story that leaves you in tears.

The first time I saw this video I cried and I am sure you will do the same: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZlXWp6vFdE)

But It’s not over. Should we run to win the race or to complete it? Which is greater? When others pass by, long gone, for one reason or another, giving up is not an option. What is the prize that we should aim for when we run our race? Is it that piece of paper that you get at graduation, that promotion, that house car, what is the prize that we should run for. If there is one thing that I realise it is that he did not continue to get a medal that chance had long gone, but still he continued to finish his race. All his life he was known as a winner and when winning mattered so much to so many, finish mattered more in the end for him.

For us too, many of us face hurdles that damage us so greatly that we feel like walking off the track instead of continuing. However, we have to continue we have to press on. I realise it is not how we start but how we finish our race. Mny remember Redmon’s race than they do the race of the person who won. Many persons have been inspired by his seeming defeat to continue at a time when they feel like giving up. It is true that our actions have a great impact on us and others who look on at what we do and say and from that we can inspire generations to come.

Though we may lose more than we win, we must run the race with the determination to finish, knowing that we will not finish alone.
